Lindsay Poteat

Chapter 1 – Birth through College

Robert "Lindsay" Poteat was raised in a Christian home in Suffolk, Virginia. Lindsay was the middle of five children and was the peacemaker. His dad sold insurance and instilled a solid work ethic into Lindsay. His mom was a stay-at-home mom and trained her children to love the Lord. She led backyard Bible clubs thru the CEF ministry. When Lindsay finished high school, he headed off to Virginia Tech to study psychology. During his first year there, his cousin and best friend Larry, died in a motorcycle accident. Larry had been headed into ministry. In the months that followed, Lindsay believed that God had called him into ministry to take Larry's place. Lindsay went to Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to study to be a pastor. Near the beginning of his freshman year, Lindsay met a young lady named Barbara Lindley. Barbara's dad, Rev. Jim Lindley – founder of the Peninsula Rescue Mission, sent Barbara to his alma mater, Piedmont, to find a husband. Lindsay and Barbara were engaged by Thanksgiving and married June 6, 1970. During Lindsay's Junior year, their daughter Faith was born.

Chapter 2 – Years of Pastoring

After Lindsay graduated from Piedmont in 1973, their little family came to Newport News where Lindsay began to work for his father-in-law at the Mission. In 1974 Lindsay received a call to pastor Antioch Congregational Christian Church - a small, country church in Windsor, Virginia. He continued to spend a day each week at the Mission helping out. While serving at Antioch, their son Philip was born. In 1981 Lindsay was called to Believer's Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia – still spending time regularly at the Mission with his father-in-law.

Chapter 3 – Running the Peninsula Rescue Mission

On September 3, 1983, Rev. Jim Lindley died suddenly and left the Mission without a director. Things moved quickly, and the Board of Directors called Lindsay to be the new Executive Superintendent of the Peninsula Rescue Mission. During the past 30 years he has ministered faithfully at the Mission. When Lindsay came, the Mission was struggling financially. While running the Mission, Lindsay was also asked to fill-in for pastors or to serve as the interim pastor at local churches. Through those contacts, the friends of the Mission grew in number. God sent many, many faithful supporters through those years who learned of the Mission because Lindsay preached in their churches.

Chapter 4 - Retirement

On January 1, 2014, Lindsay will be retiring as the Executive Superintendent, and a new chapter of his life will begin. He will continue his radio ministry "Manna for the Morning" on BBN radio. He will continue to preach as God provides opportunities. He will continue to take groups to Israel as long as he is able. And he will continue to love on his wife, his kids and their spouses, and his six super grandchildren! And as always, he will point people to Jesus!
